Samsung ice maker is not working

There are a few factors that can cause an ice maker to not work. If the ice maker appears to not be making any or enough ice, low water pressure or a faulty water filter may be to blame. When the ice maker makes small, cloudy, or clumped ice, it could be something as simple as a dirty water filter, low water pressure, or high mineral deposits in your water. In the event of a frozen ice bucket, some troubleshooting may be needed, and service may be required.

Samsung ice maker is not working

What issue are you having with your ice maker?

Ice maker is not making any ice
Ice maker is making some ice, but not enough
Ice maker makes small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice
Ice bucket is stuck or has a block of ice
Ice maker is not making any ice
Important

For dual cubed ice bites ice makers:

The ice bucket must be inserted in the correct direction. If not, the ice maker will be blocked by the scoop cover and it will stop producing ice. Check if the scoop cover is located on the rear side (it will be marked by the word "REAR"). The back of the ice bucket is lower than the front of the ice bucket.

Note

Is there ice in your ice bucket?

If there is ice in your ice bucket, then your ice maker is making ice, but not dispensing it. See our guide for that issue instead.

1
Verify the ice maker is turned on.

Most models have an Ice Off icon, which will light up when the ice maker is off. For ice production, change it so it's not lit. If you are not sure how to do this, see your user manual.

Alternatively:

  • Top Freezer models have an Ice On icon. If you want to make ice, you should leave this icon lit.
  • Family Hub models control this function in the Fridge Manager app.
  • Models with SmartThings capability can control this setting in SmartThings.
  • Models with dual ice makers will have an Ice Off icon for each ice maker, but only one button to control them both. Continue to tap the icon repeatedly until neither icon is lit.
Important

For RS27T and RS22T models:

The RS27T and RS22T models have two water lines to connect. If they are cross-connected, the water and ice dispensing functions will not work correctly. If you have one of these models and the dispenser has not worked since installation, check these lines.

2
Check the water pressure.
If your water pressure is too low, your ice maker will not be able to make ice. Choose from the following sections for the method to check your water pressure.
Models with a dispenser

Your water line should have enough pressure to fill 6 ounces (or 3/4 cup) in less than 10 seconds. Dispense water into a measuring cup to confirm the amount.

Based on the results of your test:

  • If no water dispenses at all, verify that the water line is connected. See more troubleshooting in our guide.
  • If the cup was filled in less than 10 seconds, then you have sufficient water pressure and the test was successful.
  • If the test failed, remove the water filter and try again.

Based on the results of your second test (if needed):

  • If the first test failed but the second test passed, it is either low water pressure or an old filter that requires replacement. Try replacing the filter and then start the test again. (Use only Samsung brand filters.)
  • If you’re already using a new filter and the test is successful only when the filter is removed, then the water pressure is too low.
  • If both the first and second test fail, your water pressure is too low.

If your water pressure is too low, make sure the home's water supply valve is fully open. If it wasn't already fully open, then this may have resolved your water pressure issue, so do the test all over again and see.

Important

Is your water pressure too low?

Since water pressure is not controlled by the refrigerator, it will need to be adjusted at the source. Since this can be a hassle, we recommend to contact a plumber for assistance. Either way, service is not required and no further troubleshooting is needed until the water supply is confirmed to be at least 20 psi.

Models with a water filter but not a dispenser

First, make sure the home's water supply valve is fully open. If it wasn't already fully open, then this may have resolved your water pressure issue. In addition, has your water filter expired?

Water filters that have exceeded their lifespan may reduce water pressure low enough that it impacts ice production. You’ll need to judge for yourself if it’s time for a filter replacement.

Water filters are rated for 300 gallons of usage, which represents about 6 months of use in an average household. If it’s been a while since replacing the filer, try removing it and checking if the ice production issue is resolved.

  • If your water supply valve was already fully open and removing the filter fixes the production issue, then you need to replace the filter. Use only Samsung brand filters.
Important

Has your ice maker worked before? Was the water line recently adjusted?

If the ice maker has worked before, and there is no reason the water pressure would have recently changed (like the fridge being recently moved, adjusted, or reconnected), then it is unlikely that low water pressure is the issue and you can move on to other troubleshooting (step 3).

However, if your ice maker has never worked properly since the last time the water line was adjusted (this includes if you had to fully open your water supply valve as part of troubleshooting), then confirm your water pressure is 20 psi before continuing.

Since this can be a hassle, we recommend to contact a plumber for assistance. Either way, service is not required and no further troubleshooting is needed until the water supply is confirmed to be at least 20 psi.

Note

Are you using Reverse Osmosis?

If you're using a Reverse Osmosis system to filter water, this may cause the water pressure to be too low. In this case, contact a plumber for assistance in increasing water pressure.

3
Reset the ice maker.

There is a Test button on Samsung ice makers. (Most models will require you to remove the ice bucket to view the ice maker.) Once you find this button:

  1. Press and hold the Test button until you hear a chime (which may take up to 10 seconds).

    • If the ice maker does not chime, power cycle the fridge for 2 minutes by unplugging it or turning it off at the circuit breaker, and then try again.

Note: If an error code appears, check our fridge error code guide, as the fridge may require service without any further troubleshooting.
  2. The test takes about 6 minutes. During the test cycle, you will hear ice drop into the bucket (if there is any to drop), and the water valve energize to fill the ice maker.
  3. At the end of the test, another chime will be heard.
4
Allow 3 hours for ice production to resume.

After performing the previous steps, you should begin to see normal ice production within 3 hours. However, it may take a full 24 hours for ice production to return to normal amounts (approximately 2 trays of ice every 3 hours).

Be sure to dispense ice occasionally during this period. If ice piles up at one end of the bucket, the ice maker will think it is full and stop ice production.

For more information about why dispensing ice helps with ice production, return to the choice at the beginning of the article and select Ice maker is making some ice, but not enough.

5
Request service.
If there is still no ice after 3 hours, visit our Support Center to request service.

Important

Is an error code displaying?

The presence of an error code may mean that your fridge needs service and no other troubleshooting needs to be performed, depending on what error code is displaying. Check our error code guide for refrigerators first if an error code appears.

1
Shift ice forward in the bucket, or dispense it often.

Although the ice maker is capable of making 10 pounds of ice a day, it's only capable of holding 2 pounds of ice at a time. Once the ice bucket is full, the ice maker will stop.

Additionally, if ice is not dispensed regularly, it will pile up underneath the ice maker and prevent ice production. Shifting the ice forward will fix this problem.

If a significant amount of ice is needed, periodically empty the extra ice into bags and keep them in the freezer, so the bucket can make additional batches of ice.

2
Check the water pressure.
If your water pressure is too low, your ice maker will not be able to make ice. Choose from the following sections for the method to check your water pressure.

3
Level the refrigerator.
Make sure the fridge is level. If it is not, water may not flow properly through the ice maker.
4
Keep the doors closed.

Your ice maker works best when the fridge's doors stay closed. Opening the door pauses ice production and allows warm air to enter the fridge, causing it to take longer to freeze ice.

If you increase the cooling performance of your fridge, it should reduce the time it takes to freeze ice cubes.

Ice maker makes small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice
Cloudy ice cubes

Cloudy Ice Cubes

A normal ice cube from a Samsung fridge should be a cloudy white color and shaped like an orange slice. Samsung ice makers use rapid freezing technology which traps small amounts of minerals, oxygen, and nitrogen inside the ice cube, giving it a cloudy appearance. Therefore, it's normal for the ice to be white and foggy.

The minerals in your water are not harmful and are more common in areas with hard water.

Small ice cubes

Small Ice Cubes

Small or shattered ice cubes in the ice bucket are caused by low water pressure. This occurs when the ice maker doesn't get enough water before it freezes and dumps ice into the bucket.

The minimum required water pressure for the fridge is 20 psi. If your model has a dispenser, you can easily check the pressure by dispensing water for 10 seconds, and confirming you get at least 3/4 a cup.

To increase your water pressure:

  1. Make sure your water supply valve is open all the way and that the water supply line is not pinched or kinked.
  2. If your model has a filter, remove it and check if the water pressure improves. (You can either use the dispenser or check the size of the next batch of ice.) If removing the filter fixes the water pressure issue, then your filter needs to be replaced.
  3. If the ice cubes are still small, even with a new filter, then contact a plumber for assistance in increasing your water pressure.
Dirty ice cubes

Dirty Ice cubes

It's not normal to see dark particles or flecks in your ice cubes. Dirty ice can be caused by an expired or damaged water filter, dirt in the water supply (which can occur if there was recent work done on the water lines in the home or neighborhood), or a damaged ice bucket.

If the water supply has dirt in it, you can flush a few gallons through to clean it out. Contact your plumber if this doesn't work.

Then, inspect the ice maker and its parts for any visible damage. Next, replace the water filter.

If there is any visible damage, or the ice is still dirty after replacing the water filter, please call us at 1-800-SAMSUNG.

Clumping ice cubes

Clumped ice cubes

When ice isn't being dispensed regularly, it can clump together in the ice bucket. Clumped ice may have trouble dispensing because it can get stuck in the chute. Also, clumped ice can cause the ice maker to think that the bucket is full, which causes the production to stop.

Set aside time every other week to dump the ice out, so the ice maker can produce fresh ice.

Slushy or frosty ice

Slushy ice cubes

If your ice cubes are coming out slushy or frosty, the most likely cause is frost in your ice bucket. If you fix this issue, the ice cubes should return to normal.

Ice bucket is stuck or has a block of ice
Caution

Do not defrost your ice maker.

Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker. Your ice maker has an automatic defrost function. If this is not working, then your ice maker needs service.

Ice bucket is stuck

Most ice buckets can be removed by pulling them straight out. Some models may need to be lifted up slightly before removing.

If you aren't sure how to remove it, check your user manual to make sure you are removing it correctly.

If the ice bucket can't be easily removed, it's more than likely frozen. If this happens, do not use force to remove it, or use anything such as a hair dryer to defrost it. Visit our Support Center to request service.

Block of ice in the freezer ice bucket

Wire hanging from freezer ice maker

Some ice makers are found in the freezer compartment instead of the refrigerator compartment. If a block of ice forms in the freezer compartment's ice bucket, clear the ice away and look for a white wire hanging down from the ice maker. If you see this wire, visit our Support Center to request service.

If you don't see the wire, then it's possible the ice is from a spill in the ice bucket. Continue to use the refrigerator, and if another block of ice occurs, service is required.
