Street style with Samsung photographer

Her first taste of photography

Sahara cut her teeth with street style. “I was living in a small town and location options were pretty limited, so we had to get creative,” she explained. That led to shooting for a student-run fashion magazine. “I worked with other like-minded creatives and together we conceptualized, styled, directed, casted, produced, and curated shoots. That was really influential to my growth,” Sahara said.

Keep your composition consistent

Sahara’s all about using natural light to create contrast in her photos. "I tend to be a little heavier in the shadows...and love using movement and motion," said Sahara. "I shoot in the mornings and evenings just as the sun’s going up and going down."

“I’ve really worked on understanding and utilizing natural light. I’ve started looking and shaping [it] in different ways.”

Before pressing capture

She checks three boxes: lighting, background, and angles. “One of my specialties, I like to think, is finding interesting background in the streets,” Sahara shared. She spots striking colors, pinpoints where the light’s hitting in interesting ways, and plays around with low angle shots on her Galaxy camera.

Her favorite part about shooting on a Samsung

“Definitely Pro Mode. Absolutely no question,” declared Sahara. Being able to control Galaxy photography settings, like ISO and shutter speed, makes a big difference. “When you shoot in Pro Mode, you can bring the exposure down and get all those highlights in,” she emphasized.

How she finds inspiration

Sahara’s deep love of art history draws her to photos that blend conceptual art with fashion—much of which she finds on Instagram. The network also helps with scouting interesting models and finding cool collaborations.

“There’s a really big crew of photographers in the New York Fashion Week scene that I love looking to for inspiration.”

Sahara’s tip for other emerging photographers

Study, study, study. She recommends getting familiar with art history and the foundation of photography before setting out to shoot. After all, understanding the practice you’re building helps you make your mark as an artist.

Big plans ahead

Sahara’s got a lot on her plate, but she keeps a fresh eye by balancing commercial projects with personal ones. Her goal: “working on more creative editorial shoots and building creative teams."
