Laundry is tangled or wrinkled after washing

Tangled or wrinkled laundry is not attractive. Although it helps to fold your clothes or hang them, some wrinkles (and tangling) can be reduced or prevented with a few minor adjustments in how you do the wash.

  1. Don't overload the tub.

This is the big one. Everyone wants to save time and energy by running as few loads as possible, but stuffing the washer like an overpacked suitcase will just result in wrinkled clothes. See our load size guide for the washer so you don't overfill.

  2. Avoid using the coldest setting on your washer, or Tap Cold, as this typically uses no heated water at all, and (especially in the winter season) can result in water much colder than 60°F, which is the minimum temperature most detergents are designed for. Typically the second-coldest setting is best, even when the care label for laundry specifies to use cold water.

  3. Sort your laundry and use appropriate cycles.

Don't just sort by color: when it comes to wrinkles, you also want to sort by weight and the type of fabric, as the type of washing needed for some fabric will wrinkle other fabrics. Refer to the care labels on the clothing and only wash things together that have matching care labels. This incidentally helps reduce the size of the loads, too.

In addition to sorting the laundry, you want to use the cycle and settings that matches that laundry's care label best. For instance, sheets may tangle more if they're not washed using a Bedding cycle.

See our guide to washer cycles or refer to your user manual for your model's cycle information. Models with SmartThings can also use the Laundry Recipe feature for cycle guidance.

  4. Move the clothes to the dryer as soon as possible.

You want to minimize the time between washer and dryer and not let the clothes sit wet for very long. Functions like Delay Start or Delay End can help time the ending of the cycle to when you'll be available to make the switch.

  5. Some dryers have cycles with wrinkle in the name, such as Wrinkle Release, Wrinkle Away, and Wrinkle Care. These cycles are different from the Wrinkle Prevent setting, and aren't intended for clothes coming straight out of the wash: instead, they are for clothes that are already clean and dry, that you want to reduce wrinkles on.

  6. Use Wrinkle Prevent on the dryer.

Just like with the washer, it helps to time the dryer to when you'll be able to unload the clothes immediately and while they're still warm, so they don't sit and wrinkle. To help give you more leeway, enable the Wrinkle Prevent function.

This function will keep the drum tumbling even after the clothes are done drying. This isn't part of the actual drying cycle, and there's no heat or air blowing, it's just tumbling only. Most models will show a scrolling rectangle on the display as this is happening, and you can remove the clothes at any time.

Wrinkle Prevent stops as soon as you open the door, and can run 90-180 minutes (depending on model) after the cycle completes.

  7. Review the previous steps.

Although some wrinkling and tangling can be reduced with the previous steps, there's always a chance some wrinkling and tangling may still occur. In some cases, clothes may need to be hung to dry, or ironed, in order to eliminate all wrinkles completely.

This is not a sign of an issue with your washer or dryer, so service is not required.
