Samsung phone or tablet stuck in Download mode

Samsung phone displaying download mode

If your device is displaying "Downloading...Do not turn off target," it means it is in Download mode. Download mode is used by Samsung technicians to diagnose and repair Galaxy phones and tablets. Sometimes if a button is being pressed while your device turns on it may enter Download mode, or you may see it during a normal software update.

The use of Download mode to install unsupported software can cause damage to the device that may not be covered by warranty or leave it susceptible to hacking.

If you've accidentally entered Download mode by mistake, it's ok to turn off the device. The warning displayed on screen only applies when a technician is actively using Download mode while making a repair.

  1. Press and hold Volume Down and the Power or Side button for about 7 seconds until the device restarts.
  2. If your device goes back in to Download mode after rebooting, make sure nothing is coming into contact with the buttons. If you use a case, make sure it fits properly and is installed correctly. Sometimes a case may seem like it fits properly, but it presses on buttons and unintentionally sends the device into Download mode.

If your Galaxy still boots into Download mode, please visit a Samsung walk-in service center or you can schedule a repair service online.
