SmartThings Tracker Location is Inaccurate

Since the SmartThings Tracker uses GPS and LTE technology, it can be tracked anywhere when it's within range of a cellular connection. In the SmartThings app, a circle will appear around the estimated area when the tracker's location is being reported. However, there may be slight variations to estimate the tracker's location, but the circle in the SmartThings app is an accurate approximation of its current location.

Environmental Conditions

The tracker's location accuracy is measured within a 400 foot range. The location accuracy may be affected by environmental conditions, such as buildings, low-lying areas, or poor weather conditions.

  • If the tracker's exact location is unknown, the circled area will indicate the most probable location.

  • The tracker's location may be inaccurate in rural areas where there's less cellular towers to obtain a signal from.

  • If the tracker is using GPS, the estimated location may vary depending on the satellite signal.

  • When the tracker has issue obtaining it positioning (for example, GPS is not available), the actual location of the tracker may appear outside the circle or the circle may be drawn larger.

  • If the tracker is using LTE network information, the information may vary which causes the estimated location to change.

  • Indoors, the location service will work. The tracker will use the same Wi-Fi network as your phone to triangulate your location. However, the location will be more accurate outdoors.

Variations in Location Accuracy

Since SmartThings Tracker uses cellular LTE data to send its location to the SmartThings Cloud, its estimated location may vary based on signal strength in the area. For example, if the Tracker is in a dense area during a busy time of day, the cellular signal may be weaker.

Depending on the signal strength and the network traffic in the area, it may take several seconds to several minutes for location updates to show in the SmartThings app.

Zone Inaccuracy

If there are consistent issues with exit/entry Zone alerts or presence-based automations, there might be an issue with the size or location of the Zone. Try increasing the size of the Zone, and make sure that it's set to the correct location:

  1. On your phone, open the SmartThings app.

  2. Touch the Menu from the left side, and then select the tracker's location from the Location drop-down menu.

  3. Touch the Tracker's name on the device card.

  4. Touch More Options (3 vertical dots) in the top right corner, and then touch Settings.

  5. Select Manage zones, and then touch EDIT next to the desired Zone.

  6. Pinch to zoom the size of the Zone.

  7. Touch and hold, and move the circle to the correct location, enter an address manually, or touch the compass icon to use your phone's current location.

  8. Touch SAVE to confirm.
