Samsung dryer turns on but doesn’t start or spin

A Samsung dryer that won't start or spin

Unfortunately, if your dryer isn't spinning, it usually means that service is required. There's one quick test to perform to make sure that the cycle is being started correctly. And of course make sure it's not something as simple as Child Lock.

  1. Check for an error code.

If the control panel is displaying an error code or blinking lights, something may be preventing the dryer from starting, like if the door is not closed. Troubleshoot the error code first to see if it resolves the issue.

  2. Make sure Child Lock is off.

Child Lock stops the Start button from working, so if you're trying to start a cycle and the drum won't spin, it could be Child Lock.

If the Child Lock feature is turned on, its icon will be lit. Depending on your dryer model, the Child Lock icon may look like a baby or a lock with a smiley face.

The instructions for disabling Child Lock can be found in your user manual. Or, you can refer to your control panel - the buttons to turn off Child Lock are usually labeled. You'll need to press and hold the two buttons for 3 or more seconds.

You can also unplug the dryer or turn off the circuit breaker for 60 seconds. Then, return power to the dryer to see if it worked.

  3. If your model doesn't have a digital display to show the timer, skip to step 4.

  4. Confirm the cycle actually started.

In most cases, if the drum isn't spinning, service is required. The only thing left to check is that the dryer actually started the cycle (and wasn't blocked by something like Child Lock).

The easiest way to check that the dryer can start a cycle is to select Time Dry, and touch and hold Start. Then, confirm that the timer (for how many minutes until the cycle completes) counts down. For instance, if it starts at 40, then after 1 minute, it should tick down to 39.

    • If the timer doesn't count down after 1-2 minutes, then you have not started the cycle correctly, which is why the drum isn't spinning. Verify the door is closed and that Child Lock is off, and keep trying the test until the timer counts down, the drum begins to spin, or an error code appears.

  5. Request service.

If the timer counts down (or if your model doesn't have a timer so it can't do this test), visit our Support Center to request service.
