Gas smell from Samsung range

If the range is not being used and there is a gas smell, this is potentially dangerous. If it is a strong gas smell, evacuate the area and contact your gas provider. However, it is normal to smell gas momentarily when you turn on a burner.

If you smell gas from the range and confirm that the knobs and oven are off, clear the building of all occupants and contact your gas provider. If they are unreachable, contact your local fire department.

Do not turn on appliances or electrical switches.

Do not use a phone in the building.

Natural gas is actually odorless (and tasteless and colorless), but gas companies add an odor so that you can be alerted when gas is in the area. The odor they add is from mercaptan, which is unpleasant and smells like rotten eggs. Therefore, a gas smell can be concerning. However, there's a couple occasions where you would expect a gas smell:

  • Primarily, you're going to smell gas when the cooktop or oven is in use, especially when they are first lit. This odor should be faint and quickly fade.
  • One other potential cause of a gas smell is if you turn the knob too quickly when turning on the burner. This may prevent the burner from igniting, and the gas will start to leak out. Quickly turn the burner back off or to the ignite position if this occurs.

In any other situation where you are smelling gas, this is an immediate concern. Contact your gas provider or local fire department and follow their directions on the next steps to take.
