Noises From the Back of the Refrigerator

Unusual noises from the back of the refrigerator are typically caused by the water line or the water pressure. There are a few things to check that could potentially resolve the issue and prevent the noises in the future.

If a water line is not connected, do not press down on the dispenser lever. This will eventually ruin the water valve, the water dispenser, and the ice maker.

  1. Move the refrigerator forward approximately 2 inches.

If the noise stops, this indicates the refrigerator was coming in contact with another object, such as the water line or the wall.

  2. Verify water is being supplied to the fridge.

If the water line is not connected or the water is not turned on, the water valve in the back of the fridge will make a buzzing sound. Turn off the ice maker to keep this sound from occurring. Visit the download center to obtain the user's manual for your refrigerator.

  3. Check water pressure.

You can measure water pressure by dispensing water for 10 seconds and measuring the result. The minimum that should dispense is 6 ounces. There is not a maximum, although if you are getting this noise, it may mean you have it set too high. In most homes, the water supply valve can be left completely open to dispense water as quickly as possible.

If the noise continues, reduce the water pressure (turn the water supply valve more partially closed) until the noise goes away, or water pressure is reduced to less than 6 ounces dispensed in 10 seconds.

    • If less than 6 ounces dispenses in 10 seconds, even with the valve all the way open, replace the water filter. If that doesn't help, contact a plumber.
    • If the the noise still occurs even when the valve is closed so far that less than 6 ounces dispenses in 10 seconds, visit the Support Center to request service.
