Audio or sound is not working on Samsung Chromebook

When audio isn't working on your Samsung Chromebook, you may need to update its software version or change the input or output selection. Don't forget to test your sound after each step to check if it is working.

Important
It may be necessary to reset the Chromebook. All files will be erased, including downloaded files. Be sure to back up your files using Google Drive or an external hard drive.

Note
Each time you power on your Chromebook, it checks for and applies available updates, but you can check for updates manually.

Open Settings.

Select the time in the bottom right corner to open the Quick settings panel, and then select the Settings icon (gear).

Check for updates.

Select About Chrome OS at the bottom corner of the left-side menu, and then select Check for updates; your Chromebook will begin looking for any available updates.

 

If an update is available, your Chromebook will begin updating automatically. You may be asked to restart your Chromebook when the update is complete. If one isn't available, the screen will say "Your Chromebook is up to date."

Make sure the sound isn't muted.

Select the time in the bottom right corner to open the Quick Settings panel, and then adjust the volume using the slider.

Change the sound input or output.

Select the right arrow icon next to the volume slider, and then select where the output sound will come from (headphones) or the input you will speak into (microphone).

Disconnect or unplug any audio devices, such as Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

To disconnect Bluetooth devices, select the time in the bottom right corner to open the Quick Settings panel, and then select the Bluetooth icon to turn it off.

Note
If the Chromebook is being used at work or school, it cannot be reset. Contact your administrator for support.

Use the Advanced Settings menu:

  1. Select the Taskbar in the lower right, and then select Settings.
  2. Select Advanced at the bottom.
  3. Scroll to the Reset settings section, then select Powerwash, and then select Reset.

  4. After the restart, select Powerwash when prompted, and then select Continue.

Use the shortcut keys:

  1. Select the Taskbar in the lower right, then select the Power icon, and then select Sign out.

  2. Press and hold CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + R on the keyboard, and then select Restart.
  3. When prompted, select Powerwash, and then select Continue.

Sign into your Google account

Follow the on-screen prompts and sign into your Google account to set up the Chromebook. The account you sign in with after you reset your Chromebook will be the new owner account.  If you are unable to sign into your Google account, please refer to the Google Account Help center. You can also use your Chromebook without adding a Google account. Select Browse as Guest to proceed.
