Frequently asked questions about purchases

Will I have to sign a receipt when paying with Samsung Pay?

You may need to sign a receipt (physical or electronic) as you do with payments made with a physical card. This can vary depending on the store, merchant and transaction amount. You will not receive a separate physical or digital receipt from Samsung Pay.

Will I continue to earn rewards and benefits from my payment cards when I pay using Samsung Pay?

When you make a payment with Samsung Pay, you will continue to receive the rewards and benefits (such as points or cash back) your physical card provides.

Is my credit or debit card number actually stored on my device?

No. The card information is encrypted and sent to the Samsung Pay server for processing with the payment card network's (i.e., Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) tokenization server. After processing, a token is assigned to your device, and this token is used in place of the card number. When you process a payment, this token along with other transactional information is sent to the payment terminal. Your card number is not part of this data. The terminal processing the payment does not receive your card number as part of the transaction.

Is my credit or debit card number actually stored on the Samsung Pay server?

No. The card number is encrypted and passed to the payment card network's (i.e., Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) tokenization server. After processing, a token is assigned to your device, and this token is used in place of the card number. This token information is stored on the Samsung Pay server and a copy is stored on your device. Your card number is not kept on the Samsung Pay server.

I returned an item purchased with Samsung Pay, but I do not see the return amount in the app.

Samsung Pay may not show your entire transaction history, depending on the policies set by your card issuer. Refer to your payment card statement or transaction history on the card issuer's website or mobile app, if available.

Why does Samsung Pay show a $1 charge and not the whole amount?

Some merchants, like hotels, routinely place a temporary preauthorization of $1 as a way to verify the card is active. By preauthorizing your payment card, merchants do not have to place a larger hold against your account. In the case of a hotel, the $1 charge will remain until the final amount is assessed; only then will the preauthorized charge be removed and replaced with the final amount. Card issuers and payment networks (i.e., Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) may only report the initial $1 authorization to Samsung Pay and not the final transaction amount. Refer to the card issuer's mobile app, website, or statements for final transaction details. If you believe there is an error or invalid transaction, contact the card issuer.

Note: Some card issuers may not allow transactional information or may limit the number of transactions displayed in Samsung Pay.

When I’m paying in a store using my debit card in Samsung Pay, should I choose credit or debit?

During a transaction when you are prompted to select credit or debit on the payment terminal, select the appropriate type as you would with your physical card. If you are experiencing issues when using debit as the payment type, attempt the transaction again and select credit regardless of the type of card.

How many payment cards can I add in Samsung Pay?

A total of 10 payment cards can be added to Samsung Pay. These include credit cards, debit cards, and private-label credit cards (store credit cards). There is no limit to the number of gift cards that can be added to Samsung Pay.

Note: Some cards from participating banks may not be supported in Samsung Pay. Contact your bank for more information.

Can I use the same payment card with more than one device using Samsung Pay?

There are no restrictions on adding the same payment card to multiple devices. For example, if you and your spouse share a credit card, you can add the card to both devices. The total number of devices you can add the same card to may vary by the card issuer. For additional information, contact the card issuer. Gift cards can only be added to one Samsung Pay account.

Note: Some cards from participating banks may not be supported in Samsung Pay. Contact your bank for more information.

What should I do if I have an issue adding a payment card to Samsung Pay?

Contact the card issuer and verify you are adding an eligible payment card. Some cards from participating banks may not be supported in Samsung Pay. For example, if you have an ATM-only card (this is different from a debit card), you will not be able to add the card to Samsung Pay. Some card issuers may require additional authentication before they can approve the use of your card with Samsung Pay. Only gift cards from merchants who have partnered with Samsung Pay can be added. Check the list of merchants to see which retailers are supported.

Samsung Pay also requires an active internet connection when adding a payment card or gift card. Verify you are connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network or your mobile data connection.

Can I add a payment card over Wi-Fi in Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay requires an active internet connection when adding a payment card. You can connect via a Wi-Fi network or your mobile data connection. If an internet connection is not available, you will receive a "No network connection" message, prompting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network or turn on mobile data. However, if you are attempting to add a new card while outside the country, you may experience difficulties unless your phone has a SIM card installed and an active mobile connection.

What should I do if I receive a replacement card?

If you receive a replacement payment card from your card issuer, you should remove the original card from Samsung Pay and add the new card.

What do I do if I lost internet connection in the middle of adding my payment card?

In some instances, the payment card data will be discarded, and the card will have to be added again.

How can I cancel a payment made using Samsung Pay?

Canceling a payment made with Samsung Pay is the same as canceling a payment made on a physical card. The exact process will depend on the policies of your card issuer and the merchant you made the purchase from.
