How to use the menstrual skin temperature sensor with Samsung Health
You can further improve the tracking of your menstrual cycles by activating the “Predict cycle with skin temperature” feature on your Galaxy Watch5 series and upcoming models.
Please note:
- Skin temperature during sleep is only available on the Galaxy Watch5 series and upcoming models, since it uses the skin temperature sensor introduced on the Watch5
- This feature is only available on mobile devices purchased in countries where it has been approved
- If you’re using a device made by another company, the network information on the SIM card will be used to determine whether the device is in a country where the feature has been approved
Before you begin, make sure your Galaxy Watch5 is paired with your smartphone. Then:
Please note: Predict cycle with skin temperature will only appear if the mobile device and smartwatch are properly synced and the feature is available in the country you’re in.
After activating Predict cycle with skin temperature in settings, your smartwatch will record your skin temperature while you sleep. You can see the readings in the Samsung Health app both on your smartphone and your smartwatch.
Please note: To get the most accurate reading, we recommend that you wear your smartwatch for at least 4 hours while you sleep.
Recommendations for measuring skin temperature during sleep
To get more accurate skin temperature readings while you sleep:
- Try to keep the watch in a consistent position on your wrist
- Check and maintain the temperature of the room where you’re sleeping. The reading may be less accurate if the room is too hot or too cold
- Charge your smartwatch to at least 50% before each measurement
- Make sure the surface of the infrared sensor is clean
Please note:
- As the temperature of the smartwatch increases after charging, it may be harder to accurately measure your skin temperature. After charging, wait at least 30 minutes before putting on your smartwatch
- Temperature estimates may not be accurate if you are unwell, have consumed alcohol in the last few hours, or if you sleep two hours more or less than you usually sleep
- If your cycle is very irregular, skin temperature estimates may not be valid for predicting your cycle
Frequently Asked Questions
How does skin temperature during sleep help predict my cycle?
Your smartwatch can take skin temperature readings while you sleep and relate it to your basal body temperature.
During periods before and after ovulation, basal body temperature increases by approximately 0.3 to 0.5 degrees.
If you use it consistently, your smartwatch can detect the difference in temperatures in the period before and after ovulation, helping to predict ovulation more accurately.
Why am I getting extremely high or low temperature readings?
Skin temperature is affected by your surroundings. While you sleep, your skin temperature can vary depending on how you wear your smartwatch, where you’re using it, the clothes you’re wearing, and the ambient temperature.
This is why we recommend that you maintain the most consistent environment possible when taking measurements.
How does the skin temperature sensor work?
Your skin temperature is measured using an infrared temperature sensor on your Galaxy Watch5 or later.
The sensor automatically measures your skin temperature and shows a daily reading.
Please note:
- To get a more accurate reading we recommend wearing your smartwatch for at least 4 hours while you sleep
- You need to activate Predict cycle with skin temperature in Cycle tracking settings
Why do not I get the same temperature when I take a reading using a thermometer?
Skin temperature and body temperature are two different values, which is why it’s likely that you’ll get two different readings.
Is it possible to get cycle predictions without wearing my smartwatch while I sleep?
Yes, Samsung Health calculates cycle predictions using information about your cycles recorded in the app, without having to measure skin temperature.
What factors can influence skin temperature while I am asleep?
Skin temperature can be affected by different environmental factors.
While you sleep, we recommend you always wear your watch on the same wrist, wear the same clothes, and keep the same room temperature. Temperature readings can also be affected by too high or too low temperatures.
Does waking up in the night affect temperature measurements?
If you sleep for less than 4 hours, your skin temperature won’t be properly measured, so make sure to wear your smartwatch for at least four hours while you sleep.
Why can I only see one skin temperature reading a day?
Because your skin temperature is measured while you sleep, the daily representative temperature, which has a strong correlation with basal body temperature, is calculated and used to predict your cycle.
This means that only one representative temperature value is shown each day.
Why isn’t the skin temperature feature available on models before the Galaxy Watch5 series?
Models before the Galaxy Watch5 series don’t have an integrated infrared skin temperature sensor, so cannot measure skin temperature.
Are skin temperature readings automatically synchronised during sleep?
Yes, but for this to happen, you need to activate Predict cycle with skin temperature in Samsung Health.
How long is data stored on the smartwatch?
Your watch will store data from measurements for 28 days, and it will be synchronised when you connect your smartwatch to your phone.
Can I manually measure my skin temperature?
No, skin temperature is automatically measured.
What precautions do I need to take when using Predict cycle with skin temperature?
This feature is only for personal reference and is not suitable for contraceptive purposes or medical purposes, such as diagnosis or preventive treatment, as the data may vary from your actual menstrual dates.
We also recommend:
- If you are taking medication or receiving treatment to supress ovulation, this feature cannot be used to track your ovulation dates
- We recommend wearing your watch for at least 4 hours while you sleep at night, between 7pm and 9am, at least five times a week. The predicted values can be affected by the way the watch is worn, the values you input, the surrounding environment, etc
- Please do not medically interpret the information provided by this feature or take any medical attention without consulting a qualified medical professional
- This feature is not intended for users under the age of 18
What to do if you cannot find the Predict cycle with skin temperature feature on your watch?
The Predict cycle with skin temperature feature is only available on the Galaxy Watch5 series and upcoming models.
If you’re using a non-Samsung device, the feature will be supported if it has been approved in the country you’re in.
