What is a Dynamic AMOLED Screen?
Ever wondered what AMOLED means or how it works? Unsure of the difference between Super AMOLED, Dynamic AMOLED and Dynamic AMOLED 2X? We break down the jargon and explain why AMOLED screen technology really is the one you want.
What is AMOLED?
AMOLED is an advanced display technology that is found in Samsung smartphones. AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes and is a type of OLED screen technology.
AMOLED screens provide superior photo quality, intense colour reproduction and consume less power, making them the best choice for next generation smartphones. Samsung smartphones have different types of AMOLED displays including; Super AMOLED and Dynamic AMOLED. Read on to find out the differences in this article.
How does AMOLED work?
Whilst Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) may sound complicated it simply refers to the technology that is used to light up your phone screen.
The AM part of AMOLED represents the electronic workings behind the screen that enables you to see and interact with the images on your phone.
The OLED part of AMOLED means that the display uses millions of microscopic LEDs (tiny lights) to redefine the colours you see on the screen. AMOLED displays can light up individual pixels offering sensational realistic colours and an incredible degree of colour clarity. This differs from an LCD screen which is back lit, meaning LCD displays have lower contrast ratios and less realistic images compared with AMOLED screens.
What is the difference between OLED and AMOLED?
An AMOLED screen is an advanced version of OLED that is thinner, lighter and more flexible than OLED displays. AMOLED technology can be easily embedded into a smartphone screen and has faster refresh rate compared to OLED screens, ensuring that you experience smoother motions, improved gaming performance and quality media downloads.
What are the benefits of an AMOLED display?
So what are the benefits of an AMOLED screen and why should you choose a Samsung AMOLED phone?
1. Exceptional Picture Quality
AMOLED’s high colour contrast of 13 million to 1 provides clear contrast between light and shade matching nature’s palette almost perfectly.
2. Reduced Power Consumption
AMOLED displays consume significantly less power compared with LCD panels. AMOLED screens control each individual pixel meaning that they are only on when they need to be, reducing power consumption and saving your battery for more important things.
3. Expansive Colour Gamut
AMOLED screens have a colour gamut that is 1.3 times larger than those found in LCD screens for vibrant colours and perfect blacks.
4. Higher Refresh Rates
AMOLED screens have higher refresh rates (120Hz) compared with other display technologies which means you’ll experience a faster, smoother, more responsive screen - no more glitchy gaming or blurry videos.
5. Ultra-slim Design
AMOLED displays are super thin because of the self-illuminating display whereas an LCD display requires another extra layer behind the display to install the illumination system. They can also bend to create subtle curves and flexible folds.
6. Reduced Blue Light
Samsung AMOLED displays reduce the harmful blue light wavelength to make it more comfortable for your eyes and to ensure a better night's sleep.
What are Super AMOLED displays?
First generation AMOLED displays have a touch screen function that sits as a separate layer on top of the AMOLED display whereas Super AMOLED displays are a more sophisticated version which embeds the touch screen directly into the display.
Because of the way the Super AMOLED displays are designed they benefit from an impressive 100,000:1 contrast ratio providing an excellent viewing experience, a more vivid display, responsive screen and thinner design. Super AMOLED displays will automatically adapt to different environments to consistently provide exceptional picture quality, whether you're browsing the web, playing your favourite game or streaming the latest boxset.
Enjoy rich colour and contrast exactly the way it was captured on the impressive Galaxy A55 5G with its 6.6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, 1080 x 2340 resolution and super smooth scrolling. Whether you’re a fan of photography, gaming or vlogging this phone gives you everything you want and more.
What does Dynamic AMOLED mean?
The Dynamic AMOLED display is the next generation of Super AMOLED mobile screen technology that builds on the success of Super AMOLED. First released in 2019, Dynamic AMOLED is a Super AMOLED display with added HDR10+ certification for even greater brightness, colour and contrast.
The Dynamic AMOLED display is certified by VDE Germany for 100% Mobile Colour Volume in the DCi-P3 colour range ensuring that you’ll always experience vivid colours regardless of the differing levels of brightness. Harmful blue light emitted from phone screens is also further reduced with Dynamic AMOLED screens, helping to reduce eye strain and improve your nights sleep.
What is a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display?
Dynamic AMOLED 2X is the latest and greatest generation of Dynamic AMOLED technology. Taking Dynamic AMOLED to even greater heights it offers the best in smartphone display technology. Dynamic Tone Mapping optimises colour and contrast to give 100% accurate DCI-P3 colour gamut and the ‘2X’ relates to the upgraded Hz - from 60Hz to an exceptional 120Hz ensuring super smooth scrolling and highly responsive movements - perfect for fast paced gaming and multitasking. You’ll find Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology in the latest flagship Samsung phones including the exceptional Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5.
1. Staggering refresh rates
Take scrolling to the next level with Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology. Dynamic AMOLED 2X increases the number of times the screen updates (Hz) from 60 times per second to a game changing 120 times. This means you’ll experience less lagging during game play and when it comes to films and videos the motions you see on screen will be more realistic and detailed.
2. Brighter Adaptive Displays
Enjoy record levels of brightness on Samsung Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens. The Galaxy S24 series, for example, has a staggering 2600 nit peak brightness so you’ll be able to view everything on the screen in perfect detail whether it's day or night. And with Dynamic Tone Mapping every image you see on the screen has been adjusted to provide the most detailed image complete with astonishing saturation and contrast levels.
3. Most Accurate Colours
Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays allow for the most colour accurate displays on a smartphone yet. With 100% mobile colour volume in the DCI-P3 colour range the colours you experience are the most true to life and naturalistic colours. Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens also have an incredible 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio compared with 100,000:1 contrast ratio for Super AMOLED.
Are Dynamic AMOLED displays flexible?
