How to make a smart home?

Setting up a smart home doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. You can start with a few key smart home devices and add more over time - you may even be surprised at what you already have in your home. Here’s how to get started with your smart home set up.

1. Check your Wifi is up to the task

WiFi is the backbone of your smart home and can affect the performance and reliability of your devices. As long as your router is less than 5 years old, you should be fine to get started. We recommend using Wi-Fi 6E* if you plan to connect lots of smart devices. If you're having reliability issues, especially as you add more devices, reach out to your internet service provider.

*Smart devices also need to support Wi-Fi 6E

2. Install a smart hub

A smart hub is optional for any device that connects via WiFi and isn't required unless your device uses Zigbee or Z-Wave. This is where you can control all your smart home devices with your phone or tablet. With Samsung’s SmartThings you can connect thousands of devices across many different brands including Google, Sonos, Ring and Philips Hue. The award-winning app is available on both Android and iOS, and is compatible with the leading voice assistants, giving you even more control over your smart gadgets. Once you have chosen your smart hub, connect it to your home Wi-Fi network to get started.

3. Adding smart devices to your smart hub

A smart device that’s compatible with your hub will often have its own specific connection instructions to walk you through the setup. Alternatively, with the SmartThings app, you can scan a QR code if there’s one on the device, use the app to scan for nearby devices, or enter a setup code if it’s part of the Matter ecosystem.

*Smart devices will need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi as your smart hub.

You now have free rein to start building your smart home. From security to lighting, there are so many amazing smart gadgets and appliances available. You could begin by installing smart light bulbs, or a doorbell that shows you who’s at the door. Maybe it's time for an oven that tells you when your dinner is cooked, or the ability to schedule your laundry wash from your phone when you're out and about. There are so many opportunities to enjoy a world of smarter living with a smart home.
