How to Take Great Landscape Photography

Choose your landscape
It’s a big world out there filled with many landscapes, and you’ll probably have a favourite setting to snap in. Maybe you’re an adrenaline junkie? Use the rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is an essential photography technique that will make your photos look dramatic and professional. Basically, you divide your image into sections using horizontal and vertical lines, and position the most important features of your photo at the meeting point of these lines. Once you’ve got this compositional technique nailed, your photos will be more balanced and focused. Decide what you’d like your picture to say, and direct the viewer’s gaze with the rule of thirds. The trick is deciding which part of your breathtaking landscape you’d like to focus on. Try taking different shots of the same scene and share them as a series on social media.
Capture photos in black and white
Ever heard the saying ‘a picture paints a thousand words’? Colour obviously plays a big part in photography, but there are times when a picture can paint more words without colour. For those dramatic, grandiose landscapes, capturing it in black and white will do wonders for the image and the effect it leaves on the viewer. There’s something about black and white photography that stops us in our tracks and encourages us to pay attention to other compositional elements – such as form, texture and shading. If you want to give a grainy, historical feeling to your landscapes, try going colourless with black and white.
Play with perspectives
Playing with perspectives is a fun and simple way to be creative with your photography. Don’t just limit yourself to the standard selfie or mid-chest shot; with a light and portable smartphone, you can capture landscapes from all angles. Crouch down for a low-angle shot to make the scenery look larger than life. Or, climb to great heights to capture a high-angle shot for those majestic wide-screen sceneries. Landscapes look different depending on the time of day you decide to shoot them. From sunrise to sunset, a landscape will change time and time again.
