Best piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to become a freelancer or someone starting their own business?

Always have more than one option - never rely on just one. This could be in reference to suppliers, customers, advisors or anything else.

Options will fall through, people won’t reply, luck won’t go your way - mitigate this by having many alternatives.

What career advice would you give to your younger self?

Tailor your message and communication style to your audience - whether that’s your manager or client. Are they an avid-reader, but not the best with numbers? Then you’re probably best off summarising those weekly stats in a Google Doc instead of a spreadsheet...

Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. When you’re young, a year feels like an eternity, but in the grand scheme of a 40+ year career, it’s a really short time.

How do you make your online portfolio stand out?

Show off your absolute best and most unique work. Ensure it’s aesthetically appealing - even if your line of work isn’t visual, e.g., copywriting.

What’s the best tip for negotiating your salary?

Find multiple sources to illustrate your market rate. It’s hard for anyone to argue with data.
