Every year around 640,000 tons of these are abandoned at sea. Known as “ghost nets,” they pose a serious threat to our planet. If we don’t do something about these nets, they will cause irreversible damage to marine life and our natural ecosystems. We believe that through innovation, we can develop a solution that not only prevents fishing nets from becoming dangerous waste but also gives them new life as they’re repurposed into sustainable products. That’s why we’re introducing our first-ever smartphone that incorporates repurposed fishing nets. (Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.) It’s our most sustainable phone yet. And with the help of our partners, we hope it can enable us to reduce the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans and protect the health of our planet. (Sung-Ho Cho. MX Business, Samsung Electronics.) Fishing nets are exposed to harsh elements like seawater and UV rays for a long time, making them extremely fragile and difficult to upcycle. To counter these challenges, we needed an innovative approach that used our technology to transform this deteriorating nylon plastic into a durable material. We partnered with leading organizations to collect discarded fishing nets from in and around the Indian Ocean and optimize their quality and performance for use in our technology. Together, we created a solution that repurposes these dangerous fishing nets into a reliable, high-performance material for our Galaxy devices. (Chan-Gyun Shin. Hanwha Compound.) MX business, Samsung Electronics.) The Galaxy S22 series incorporates a material made from 20% repurposed fishing nets in its key bracket and inner cover of S Pen. By the end of 2022, Samsung’s use of ocean-bound plastics across its products could recover more than 50 tons of discarded fishing nets from in and around our oceans. (Nilesh Kumar Kukalyekar.
