Wildlife Watch

Watch out for endangered animals, live.
Be a virtual ranger to help fight poaching.

We all love animals, but unfortunately the world has seen a dramatic increase in poaching due to the sudden halt of tourism to game reserves. This has meant far less people have been around to watch out for wildlife under threat.

Wildlife Watch is a customized new experience that enables anybody, anywhere in the world to act as a virtual ranger and watch over wildlife, live.

We believe that the simple act of watching over animals helps to protect them. Using technology, we will help fight back against poaching in the South African Bush.

That’s why Samsung has joined forces with African technology pioneers Africam.
By reimagining one of our latest mobile phones in a partnership of tech for good, we’ve used Samsung Galaxy S20 FE handsets and its incredible cameras as a ‘surveillance system’, to supercharge the security of Africa’s most vulnerable animals. Creating a world of eyes watching over the endangered wildlife and the most wanted predators, poachers.

Take the Watch and play your part in helping to protect endangered animals from poaching. Monitor them in their natural habitat and enjoy spectacular live sightings from home.

By becoming a virtual ranger in this interactive experience, you can alert rangers on the ground if you see animals in danger, or see signs of poaching. Share what you see via snapshots on social media to encourage others to take part and donate to The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. With different camera views it’s never the same watch twice, and you might witness elephants, lions and even giraffes in the wild from your sofa. Be a virtual ranger.

Africam and the Black Mambas

Africam’s key objective is to connect wildlife enthusiasts with live sightings in the African bush. They are the only organisation successfully live streaming animals in their natural environment from Africa, online 24/7, while continually developing new technology every day to work in the tough bush setting and the most remote locations.

While we’re supporting Africam in its efforts, we’re also helping its charity partner The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. The world's first all-female rangers operate unarmed as they lookout for poachers, wire-snares, and break-ins along the fence line while patrolling up to 500 square km of the Balule Game Reserve each day.

Breaking strong patriarchal tradition, these courageous women focus on eliminating illegal wildlife trade, education and wildlife protection. They are a voice in their communities, as they believe the war on poaching will not be won with guns and bullets, but through education within their local communities.

Through Wildlife Watch you will be closer to the work they do, see the endangered animals they protect and have the opportunity to donate to support them.

Using our phone technology to protect wildlife

To enhance the surveillance of wildlife, four Samsung Galaxy S20 FE handsets have been installed as additional cameras in the bush, boosting the reach of the existing Africam infrastructure in the Balule Nature Reserve, South Africa.

The pro-grade camera, large image sensors and powerful 30X Space Zoom in each handset is being used to capture animals for the live stream and to support the rangers in their daily tasks. Additionally, Samsung handsets are being reimagined and redeployed by the park rangers as CCTV cameras for perimeter fences, as well as adding crucial tech support to improve their daily patrols.

A camouflaged Jeep fitted with a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is also being used by the rangers for surveillance patrols, and the live streamed action from this handset will bring you closer to the rangers and their daily experiences.

International DJ, producer and fashion designer Peggy Gou, who loves wild animals – especially giraffes – is fronting Wildlife Watch to champion and encourage people to take part and donate. She uses the Samsung Galaxy S21 to take the watch and be a virtual ranger.

Global Goals

Wildlife Watch supports The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a plan adopted by 193 United Nations Members, by increasing eyes on animals and growing surveillance to fight poaching. Get involved with a global movement.

Samsung is committed to using technology as an instrument for good and its Galaxy upcycling programme aims to solve social needs, lengthen product lifecycles, and reduce waste by reimagining phones into new roles.
