Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is an idea contest for youth designed to advance their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) competencies and creative problem-solving skills required for the future workforce. Teachers and Samsung employees mentor students on identifying the root causes of problems and turning their ideas into viable solutions. In 2023, we provided a total of KRW 23.4 billion in funding to Samsung Solve for Tomorrow.
Most residents in El Comun, a small rural village in Peru, work in agriculture and livestock. Among them is Mariela, who wakes up before sunrise to assist with chores. Lanterns become the only way to illuminate the pitch blackness of dawn for most of the village which lacks electricity. Simply charging electronics is limited to a communal farm about 15 minutes from Mariela’s home. To improve the lives of those without access to electricity, these students put their minds together to come up with a solution. They developed the idea of “Trapiche,” which uses the kinetic energy from a mill turned by livestock, such as horses or cows, to turn on lights or charge electronics. This idea ensures residents no longer need to travel far to get electricity, allowing them to study and do chores even in the nighttime.
"Working to solve the problems throughout Solve for Tomorrow, we learned how to work as a team, with each of its members having a clearly defined role. It was also a great opportunity for me to acquire new skills, such as communicating, attracting new partners, and securing the funds needed to build a prototype of the solution we proposed. I could also draw upon the experience of other teams, including those consisting of members from different national backgrounds. I strongly recommend participating in Solve for Tomorrow for my peers, as the entire undertaking is a great intellectual adventure."
