Planning a vacation often involves packing your favorite swimsuits, but don't let those sunscreen-streaked suits sit neglected in your closet upon returning home. The care your swimsuit requires depends on its fabric, with most women’s swimsuits needing hand washing to maintain their form and fit. Conversely, men's swim trunks are typically durable enough for a gentle cycle in your washing machine. Follow our expert tips and detailed instructions to ensure your swimsuits stay pristine and ready for your next getaway!

Note: While the advice in this guide is universally applicable, it has been tailored specifically for our Canadian customers.

Whether you decide to hand wash or machine wash your swimsuit, follow the tips and tricks below to ensure it always comes out clean:

  • Regular washing: Wash your swimsuit after a few wears, if possible. Even brief periods at the beach or pool can coat your suit with oils, sunscreen, chlorine, salt water, and sand.
  • Chlorine damage: Chlorine can be particularly harmful to swimsuits, more so than salt water. If your suit has been exposed to chlorine for extended periods, it's crucial to wash it promptly to mitigate damage.

  • Avoid bleach: Never use bleach on your swimsuit, even if it is white. Bleach can deteriorate the fabric and destroy the suit.
  • Spot clean sunscreen stains: To remove sunscreen stains, spot clean with a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. Apply a small amount to the stain and let the swimsuit sit for a few hours before washing.
  • Care instructions: Always check the care label on your swimsuit. Most swimsuits, especially women's, should be hand washed to maintain their shape and fabric quality. Avoid putting your swimsuit in the dryer as the heat can damage the material.

Most swimsuits, particularly those made from delicate, synthetic fabrics like spandex, should be hand washed. This is especially important for women's swimsuits. Always check the care instructions on your suit before proceeding. Follow these steps to hand wash your swimsuit effectively:

1 Initial rinse: Immediately after wearing, rinse your swimsuit in cool water. Allow it to soak for about 30 minutes to help remove sand and dirt.
2 Prepare washing solution: Fill a sink with cool water and add a small amount (about 1 tablespoon) of gentle laundry detergent or unscented hand soap. Stir the water gently until the detergent is fully dissolved and bubbly.
3 Submerge and soak: Completely submerge your swimsuit in the solution. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, or up to an hour if it’s particularly stained.

Note: If your swimsuit has embellishments or decorations, turn it inside-out to protect these details from damage.

4 Gentle agitation: Swish the swimsuit around in the water to ensure the detergent reaches all areas.
5 Remove and squeeze: Remove the swimsuit from the detergent solution and gently squeeze out the water. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse under cool water if any soap residue remains.
6 Drying: Lay the swimsuit flat on a dry towel in a cool place to air dry. Roll the towel to absorb excess water. Avoid direct sunlight and do not hang the swimsuit, as this could stretch or damage the fabric.
7 Storage: Once completely dry, store your swimsuit in a garment bag or drawer to keep it in optimal condition.

Men's swim trunks and certain women's swimsuits can be machine washed safely after a day at the beach or pool. Always check the care instructions on your suit before washing. If unsure, opt for hand washing, as even the gentle cycle may be too harsh for some women's suits. Follow these steps for machine washing your swimsuit securely:

1 Setting up: Select a Delicates or Hand Wash cycle on your washing machine and use a gentle detergent specifically formulated for swimwear or activewear. To protect the fabric, place the swimsuit in a mesh laundry bag.

2 Prepare the machine: Load your swimsuit into the washing machine, setting the temperature to the coldest setting to prevent fabric damage.
3 Wash cycle: Start the wash cycle. For women’s swimsuits, it’s advisable to wash them alone to avoid damage. Men’s swim trunks, however, can be washed with other delicate items, like sandy beachwear.
4 Drying: Once the cycle is complete, remove the swimsuit and let it air dry on a towel in a cool place. Avoid direct sunlight and hanging the swimsuit, as these can stretch or degrade the fabric.
