Our journey towards 'Everyday Sustainability'

Sustainability is a group effort, and every member of our Samsung family is motivated to carry on this journey. Samsung Electronics announced its new environmental strategy — a comprehensive drive to join global efforts to tackle climate change. Samsung's strategy strives to deliver sustainable business today and into the future by focusing on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, developing energy and resource-efficient products and investing in innovative technologies for a better planet. We aim to source 50% of the plastic used in its products from recycled resin by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2050. This strategy extends beyond devices and appliances to other products like accessories too, making these everyday items resource-efficient as well.

Shaping a culture of everyday sustainability with the future generation

The Samsung Future Generation Lab brings together our youngest generation of employees from all over the world. They look for ways in their daily lives that could lead to a more eco-minded, sustainable business. Then they incorporate that into Samsung's marketing and whole-of-organization practices. It’s their goal to achieve everyday sustainability for tomorrow’s generations. To further spread their dedication to creating an eco-conscious culture, they shared Samsung's sustainability practices and missions at global events such as the recent Unbox & Discover 2022 and Bespoke Home 2022.

Finding, activating and expanding a sustainable lifestyle

According to a new OECD report, the amount of plastic waste produced globally is on track to almost triple by 2060. We focused on the growing single-use plastic waste in our everyday lifestyles, seeking out ways to reduce and recycle. In 2021 alone, Samsung has collected and used approximately 33 thousand tonnes of recycled plastics, including old household appliances, PET bottles and fishing nets discarded in the ocean. This effort adds to Samsung's existing total of 310 thousand tonnes since 2009. To further grow this use of recycled materials, members of the Future Generation Lab expanded their focus to not just Samsung devices but also other items we use in our daily lives.

We've also met eco-minded small manufacturers and shared insights on countless ways to recycle and reimagine the use of these plastics. We've actively supported them to use recycled plastics instead of regular plastics. Through these partnerships, we discovered new ways to incorporate eco-conscious, recycled plastics into the manufacturing process.

Step by step, working together for a sustainable tomorrow

We've partnered with small manufacturers and designers in the co-creation of products using eco-conscious materials. These partnerships help all of us to grow as sustainable businesses in the future. At the same time, we're also incorporating recycled plastics from our existing range of devices into new products as part of our journey towards everyday sustainability.
