How do front load washers work?

Front load washers fill the drum with water and use the rotation of the drum to move the clothes through the water. While inside the drum, side paddles lift clothes in and out of the water providing a scrubbing action to help remove soil from clothes.

Top load washers use either an agitator or impeller to create friction either with the agitator or other clothes to help remove soil from clothes.
How do impeller washers work?

Top load washers with impellers work by rotating the tub so clothes rub against each other to help remove soil.
